Geographical Location
Changbai Mountain, also known as Mount Changbai or Changbaishan, is located in southeastern Jilin Province, Northeast China, within the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and bordering North Korea to the south. This majestic dormant volcano straddles the China-North Korea border, with its highest peak, Baitou Peak (White Head Peak), reaching 2,691 meters above sea level—the tallest in Northeast China. It is the source of three major rivers: the Songhua, Yalu, and Tumen. Surrounded by pristine forests and volcanic landscapes, Changbai Mountain is a UNESCO Global Geopark and one of China’s most iconic natural reserves, offering breathtaking scenery year-round.
Highlights and Activities
Changbai Mountain is renowned for its unique volcanic terrain, crystal-clear lakes, hot springs, and diverse ecosystems. The scenic area is divided into North, West, and South Slopes (with North and West being the most accessible and popular). Visitors can explore via eco-friendly shuttle buses and designated trails.
  • Heaven Lake (Tianchi): The crown jewel of Changbai Mountain, this stunning crater lake sits at 2,189 meters elevation, surrounded by 16 rugged peaks. Its emerald-blue waters are legendary, often shrouded in mist, and it’s said to be home to a mysterious “lake monster.” In summer, enjoy panoramic views; in winter, witness a frozen wonderland. Access via jeep or shuttle to the summit for unforgettable photos.
  • Changbai Waterfall: A dramatic 68-meter drop where water from Heaven Lake plunges into a deep pool, creating rainbows in the mist. It’s one of the world’s tallest volcanic waterfalls and a must-see on the North Slope.
  • Julong Hot Springs: Bubbling natural springs with temperatures up to 82°C, rich in minerals beneficial for health. Relax in the steaming pools, boil eggs in the water, or simply marvel at this geothermal wonder near the waterfall.
  • Hiking and Nature Trails: Trek through the Underground Forest (Valley Forest) with ancient trees and canyons, explore alpine gardens bursting with wildflowers in summer, or wander boardwalks in the Grand Canyon on the West Slope.
  • Winter Adventures: Transform into a ski paradise with world-class resorts like Wanda Changbaishan International Ski Resort. Enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, or admiring rime ice and snowy landscapes.
